Yoon Research Group (ECE, University of Utah)
ECE 5255/6255 (Advanced Electron Microscopy for Semiconductor Materials and Devices) held a mini-conference. Students led individual projects by applying the fundamental knowledge learned in this course. The samples include a LaCrosse mesh (flexible electronics) to Si-containing plants, in addition to i7 CPU chips.
A journal paper with Korea Aerospace University, Los Alamos National Lab, and other collaborators has been published. In this work, a high-resolution Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) was used to study the heterogeneous electronic properties of 2D/3D materials (Ge film on MoS2). The University of Utah is one of the partners at the US-MAC Consortium (Manufacturing of Advanced Cadmium Telluride; https://www.usa-cdte.org/). The Yoon research group was invited to the 5th PV workshop in Chicago (10/27 ~ 10/29). She discussed the current process of the small contact approach on a Cd(Se, Te) film. It was terrific to meet researchers and collaborators in person after the web-based meetings.
We congratulate our undergrad student, Miranda Cardenas, for receiving a Micron Scholarship ($5,000 ) to continue her Nanofab projects. Her research focuses on design and fabrication of 3D nanostructures for solar cell applications. Miranda uses Nanoscribe at the Nanofab that can produce 3D features as small as 150 nm. Way to go, Miranda!

A journal manuscript on thin-film semiconductor/2D materials has been submitted. This work represents a continuing collaboration with Los Alamos National Lab and Korea Aerospace University. It is exciting to have a new PhD student, Etee Kwana Roy. Etee has a strong research background in the analytical modeling of multiparticle self-assembly. At the U, she will work on the microstructural measurements and analysis of thin-film semiconductor devices. We sincerely welcome Etee.
A first-year graduate student, Yu-Lin (Nick) Hsu, won a Student Award at M&M (Microscopy and Microanalysis Conference; https://www.microscopy.org/MandM/2021/). We also congratulate our former graduate student, Kaden Powell, who had initiated this work.
Their project focuses on hybrid metal-halide perovskite solar cells. M&M is the largest international microscopy conference, often having over 1600 attendees. We are so proud of them. We thank our collaborators (Dr. Chongwen Li, Prof. Yanfa Yan at University of Toledo).

Dr. Yoon is invited to give a talk at the Advanced Photonics Congress (OSA, The Optical Society) in July, 2021. She will discuss the recent progress on the “Nanocontact Approach” for thin-film photovoltaic materials and devices (CdTe, perovskites).
