2022 01 WAESO Grant Supporting Students
Yoon’s group won a WAESO grant (The Western Alliance to Expand Student Opportunities; https://www.waeso.org/). This funding will support talented students having diverse backgrounds and cultures. Our team members endorse the 12 Principles of the Code (Code of Conduct).
2022 01 Welcome Aaron and Rolando.
Aaron Coon and Rolando Quintana jointed the group. We are happy to have you in our group. Welcome!
2021 12 eMicroscopy Mini-Conference
ECE 5255/6255 (Advanced Electron Microscopy for Semiconductor Materials and Devices) held a mini-conference. Students led individual projects by applying the fundamental knowledge learned in this course. The samples include a LaCrosse mesh (flexible electronics) to Si-containing plants, in addition to i7 CPU chips.
2021 12 Featured Journal Paper on AIP Advances (Ge/MoS2)
A journal paper with Korea Aerospace University, Los Alamos National Lab, and other collaborators has been published. In this work, a high-resolution Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) was used to study the heterogeneous electronic properties of 2D/3D materials (Ge film on MoS2). See the details here: https://aip.scitation.org/doi/full/10.1063/5.0075599.
2021 11 Engineering Days
Hundreds of high school students from Utah and around the country attended the annual College of Engineering “Engineering Day” event Saturday, Nov. 13. The event exposes students to different engineering disciples and gives them a taste of the exciting possibilities a career in engineering can offer. (see details: https://www.ece.utah.edu/2021/11/16/engineering-day-2021/).
Yoon Research Group members (Nick, Etee, and Miranda) hosted students visiting our lab.
We are hiring PhD students.
With the growth of our research program, we are hiring more PhD students. Successful candidates hold an MS degree in Electrical Engineering, Material Science, Physics, Chemistry, or related field. Must be a team player who can fully dedicate himself/herself to research projects. Please see the details on the “Openings” page (here).
We endorse the code of conduct described here (Code of Conduct).
2021 11 Dr. Yoon gives a talk at the PV Workshop in Chicago.
The University of Utah is one of the partners at the US-MAC Consortium (Manufacturing of Advanced Cadmium Telluride; https://www.usa-cdte.org/). The Yoon research group was invited to the 5th PV workshop in Chicago (10/27 ~ 10/29). She discussed the current process of the small contact approach on a Cd(Se, Te) film. It was terrific to meet researchers and collaborators in person after the web-based meetings.
2021 10 Miranda receives a Micron Award ($5,000)!
We congratulate our undergrad student, Miranda Cardenas, for receiving a Micron Scholarship ($5,000 ) to continue her Nanofab projects. Her research focuses on design and fabrication of 3D nanostructures for solar cell applications. Miranda uses Nanoscribe at the Nanofab that can produce 3D features as small as 150 nm. Way to go, Miranda!
[Update] Miranda’s story on the ECE website (here)
This project is sponsored by NSF CAREER (#2048152) and NSF ECCS (#1711885).
2021 10 Submit a manuscript on thin-film/2D materials.
A journal manuscript on thin-film semiconductor/2D materials has been submitted. This work represents a continuing collaboration with Los Alamos National Lab and Korea Aerospace University. This project was initiated by a former graduate student (Dr. David Magginetti) and sponsored by the University of Utah (Start-up Fundings).
